22–26 September 2026, New York, United States – A High-Level delegation of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Mediterranean (PAM) and its Centre for Global Studies (CGS), led by Hon. Giulio Centemero (Italy), PAM President, will participate in the High-level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The General Debate will be held under the theme “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All”. Under the Presidency of H.E. Dr. Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh, the session will address pressing challenges related to international peace and security, sustainable development, climate action, human rights, emerging technologies and the reform of the multilateral system.
As in previous years, PAM-CGS will contribute to the proceedings of the High-level Week of the 81st Session of the UNGA with a dedicated High-level Side-Event on 24 September.
The High-level Side-event, entitled “Governance, Technology and Trust in the Age of AI: The Role of Parliaments and Parliamentary Diplomacy in Countering Online Terrorist Narratives”, is organized in partnership with the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT)
It will examine how Artificial Intelligence and digital technologies are reshaping the dissemination of violent extremist and terrorist narratives, as well as the policies and tools available to counter them.
The opening session will feature interventions by Amb. Alexandre Zouev, Acting Under-Secretary-General for Counter-Terrorism; Ms. Natalia Gherman, United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Executive Director of CTED; and Hon. Giulio Centemero.
Discussions will focus on the legislative, oversight and representative functions of Parliaments in developing effective regulatory frameworks, establishing clear responsibilities for technology companies and ensuring that counter-terrorism measures remain consistent with human rights, fundamental freedoms and the Rule of Law.
Alongside these engagements, the PAM delegation will hold a series of bilateral meetings with senior United Nations officials and representatives of partner institutions to strengthen cooperation and advance shared priorities.//
