21 November 2024 – UNSG António Guterres delivered his remarks to the media at COP29 in Baku, following his participation in the G20 Summit in Rio. Stressing the urgency of the moment, Guterres underscored that achieving an ambitious climate finance agreement is essential to combating the growing threat of climate change.
Guterres emphasized that failure is not an option. A lack of agreement would not only hinder immediate climate action, but also stall progress on the development of new national climate action plans, aligned with the 1.5°C target. Furthermore, he highlighted that the success of COP30 in Brazil, next year, hinges on the results achieved in Baku, calling for nations to step up their efforts and prioritize climate finance.
As negotiations continue in Baku, Guterres urged ministers and negotiators to soften hard lines, prioritize the collective good, and keep sight of what is truly at stake: a safer, more sustainable future for all.
PAM, echoing the words of its President, Enaam Mayara (Morocco), who yesterday addressed the High Level Segment (HLS) of COP29, calls for decisive action, recognizing the Euro-Mediterranean region as a climate change hotspot, supporting robust and inclusive climate policies that prioritize vulnerable regions. The Assembly stresses the importance of international collaboration and adherence to the principles of the Paris Agreement, urging all parties to focus on renewable energy transitions, water resource management, and the protection of biodiversity.
Moreover, as announced by Amb. Dr. Abdulsalam AlMadani PAM Roving Ambassador for the GCC and Chairman of the PAM Centre for Global Studies (CGS), at the UN Summit of the Future in New York, last September, PAM-CGS, in line with Guterres’ remarks in Baku, envisages to organize a high-level “Trust Path & Reputation Summit” which, towards the end of 2025, will look at the status of implementation of the UN Pact for the Future, with focus on Trust and Multilateral Global Governance.
