USA Issues the first National Security Memorandum on AI

25 October 2024 – Yesterday, the President of the United States of America issued the first-ever National Security Memorandum (NSM) on Artificial Intelligence AI. This memorandum underscores the necessity for a coordinated approach to harness the power of AI while ensuring the technology aligns with democratic values and protects human rights.

In this context, the Centre for Global Studies (CGS), a PAM project, is conducting comprehensive research on the risks and challenges associated with AI, particularly its misuse by criminal and terrorist groups. A forthcoming report, developed in collaboration with the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee Executive Directorate (CTED) and the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism (UNOCT), will provide critical insights into these challenges and propose measures to mitigate risks.

Moreover, PAM-CGS is already engaged in another important report focused on Parliamentary Oversights on the use of Spyware.

On its side, PAM is working at a report on the resilience of democratic systems in relation to the misuse of AI and new technologies. This report aims to explore the vulnerabilities that arise from technological advancements and propose strategies to safeguard democratic institutions in an increasingly complex digital landscape.
